Baroness play electronic offshoot of technical heavy metal with melodic elements and intelligent guitar lines suggesting an influence by indie rock and post-punk bands. The band are John Baizley (guitar and vocal), Gina Gleason (guitar), Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums). They come from Lexington, Virginia, but in 2003, shortly after they were founded they moved to Savannah, Georgia. There have been many personnel changes during their fifteen year career. Between 2004 and 2007 they released three EP’s – First, Second and A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk which they made together with Unpersons and contributed with two songs.
The recording of the first album started in March 2007. It was released the same year and got a nickname The Red Album thanks to its cover. It received very positive reviews and several media called it the album of the year.
