The British band Incognito is coming after 3 years back to Prague to present their new album Amplified Soul. The legends of jazz-funk and soul are having their concert on the 25th of October, exactly on the 20th anniversary of the Lucerna Music Bar!
The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last 20 years. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow the list to those that have created a uniquely British sound and that have endured as a global phenomenon on their own terms and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1980 and celebrating 25 years of positive vibes and undiluted jazz funk in 2005.
The secret weapon of producer Bluey is to choose the best voice for each song. Passionate soul vocal of Deborah Bond sings I See The Sun, the voice of Katie Leone sings the gospel song Hand Up If You Wanna Be Loved and Chiara Hunter sings the jazz song Deeper Still. The male voices are coming e.g. from Tony Momrelle. Incognito shows at their new album Amplified Soul, that they have their own sound, but are even after 36 years not at all boring.
Guitarist, composer and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick founded Incognito in 1979. Debut album Incognito was called Jazz Funk and was a sensation on the music market. The albums that followed Tribes cemented Incognito’s stature as a global phenomenon. In 1992 they released Tribes, Vibes and Scribes. Bluey added American vocalist Maysa Leak. and cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” became another hit for the band. The album ascended Britain’s pop charts and went on to feature in the America’s contemporary jazz charts. 1993’s ‘Positivity’ was among their best, crammed full of slick productions and universal hits like Still A Friend Of Mine and Givin’ It Up. Positivity sold almost a million worldwide and became the group’s biggest album success. The band toured relentlessly and Pamela Anderson and Joy Malcolm were brought in as featured vocalists on their 1995 world-wide hit album 100° and Rising. Even after 36 years Incognito is still going on, from world hits to productions of great artists such as Chaka Khan, Philip Bailey and George Benson.
